Ron Asheton Of The Stooges

Ron Asheton, born on the July 17, 1948, is an eminent guitarist, and co-songwriter for the rock band The Stooges. He is ranked as number 29 on the Rolling Stone's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."

Ron was musically inclined as a young boy, and practiced the accordion for five years before he learned how to play the guitar at age ten. As a part of the band The Stooges, Asheton achieved great success, with their 1969 self titled album featuring hit songs such as "I wanna be your dog" and "1969." A typical Stooges song style would include two minutes of composed song followed by improvisations at the guitar. The albums reflected this "live sound" of the band, and the Stooges were set to make a distinct impression on the minds of the public. The Stooges, including Asheton and the iconic Iggy Pop were catapulted into cult status, with the release of their subsequent albums.

Elektra records, who had Stooges under them initially. were weary with the unfinished first album material the group offered, but overnight the band managed to write three hit songs, "Real Cool Time", "Not Right", and "Little Doll", playing them first time at the studio the next day.

Their first self titled album has evoked a cult following, and is held as one of the Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums of all time. Even GQ magazine has bestowed honors upon the band's song "I wanna be your dog," placing it at #13 in its list of "The 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks."

Buddy Guy Is A Blues Legend

Buddy Guy was born on July 30, 1936, as George Guy. A Grammy Award winning blues and rock guitarist and singer, Guy is known for his extravagant display of playing the guitar on stage, sometimes strumming the guitar with drumsticks, and entering the audience while trailing with a long guitar chord.

Guy grew up in Louisiana, and learned how to play the guitar on a two string diddley bow, he had crafted out himself. In the early 1950s, he started performing with Baton Rouge bands. When he moved to Chicago in 1957, Guy was greatly influenced by Muddy Waters. He signed under the Cobra Records, after having won the same via a guitar competition.

Guy became famous in Great Britain with the popularization of the American Folk Blues Festival in the 1960's, where young rock guitarists like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and the band The Rolling Stones were searching for inspiration from American blues roots.

He became a leading celebrity at the Supershow, held in England, in the year 1969. The show also included Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Stephan Stills, and Jack Bruce, among others.

Buddy Guy was a beloved blues exponent during the revival period of blues music, in the late 80's and 90's. The Royal Albert Hall, at London saw Guy perform with an all-stars 24 Nights blues guitar concert, which Clapton persuaded him to take part in. The early 90's also saw Guy sign up with Silvertone Records, which was a successful venture for both parties.

Stephen Stills Rocks With Crosby, Stills, Nash And Young

Stephen Arthur Stills was born on the January 3, 1945. He is a renowned guitarist and singer/songwriter, having worked with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash. In the year 2003, Stills was ranked as the number 28 in the list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."

Stills early music career began with a string of rather unsuccessful bands, such as, The Continentals, Au Go Go Singers, among others. After having toured for a while, he convinced band mate from Au Go Go, Richie Furay, to start a new band. In 1966, Stills, Furay, and guitarist Neil Young, went to form the core part of the group Buffalo Springfield.

Stills is known to have been influenced from a wide range of guitar playing styles, including, folk, rock, blues, and a little bit of Latin. Stills was playing generic styles of country, rock n roll, and acoustic folk chords, early on. In his later recordings, he has shown influences of the Hendrix style, who was his friend. Stephan Stills was notoriously famous for experimenting with guitar strings, sometimes by flipping pickups to imitate Hendrix's style, and at other times soaking the guitar strings in barbeque sauce!

When the Buffalo Springfield was dissolved, Stills teamed up with David Crosby and Graham Nash, to form the group Crosby, Stills & Nash. When Neil Young joined them, the group's name was extended to add his name. In the late 1960's and early 70's, CSN and CSNY were the nearest rivals of Beatles in terms of popularity in the US.

Freddy King Plays The Blues

Freddy King (September 3, 1934 - December 28, 1976) was an eminent blues guitarist and singer of the late 50's and early 60's. His notable hits include "Hide Away", "Have you ever loved a woman" and "The Stumble".

Freddy was born as Fredrick Christian King, in Gilmer, Texas. Freddy's mother and uncle, who both played the guitar, started teaching Freddie how to play the same, when he was six. At the age of 16 when he used to sneak in to local clubs, he heard live blues music performed by the likes of Muddy Waters, Elmore James, and Sonny Boy Williamson. Howlin' Wolf, who got acquainted with him through these clubs, took him under his wing. Freddie subsequently began jamming with Muddy Waters' sidemen, such as Eddie Taylor, Robert Lockwood Jr., Jimmy Rogers, and Little Walter.

In 1960, King signed with Federal Records, through Sonny Thompson. On August 26, 1960 he recorded "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" and "Hide Away", which will have eventually become two of his most popular melodies. "Hide Away", was an instrumental tune, comprising of guitar with rhythm section, but it delighted everyone and managed to reach #29 on the US pop chart, instead of remaining a blues tune. It was later covered by Eric Clapton, the Canadian guitarist Jeff Healey, among others.

In England, where he went for his first overseas tour in 1967, he was hailed a great success. While King was due for a series of appearances on an R&B program called "The!!!Beat", he was noticed by Atlantic Records celebrity King Curtis. In 1968 Freddy signed with the Atlantic subsidiary, Cotillion Records, as by this time his deal with Federal had expired.

In his later years, he became close to Eric Clapton as they went about touring together. Clapton admired and respected King, and later on he signed with the label Clapton was recording for, RSO.

David Howell Evans Is The Edge In U2

David Howell Evans or "The Edge" as he is known as, was born on August 8, 1961 in London, and has been a part of the rock band U2 since its inception. Evans is said to have been given this name because of his insane love for heights. The Edge is the renowned guitarist, keyboardist, and back up vocalist of U2. His percussive style of playing, with a unique guitar timbre have helped U2 attain a distinctive sound, easily distinguishable as their very own. In 2003, Rolling Stone Magazine hailed The Edge as the 24th greatest guitarist, from "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."

The Edge took piano as well as guitar lessons during his childhood years, and often performed with his brother Dik Evans. Answering to an advertisement posted by Larry Mullen Jr. looking for musicians for a rock band, both of them went to the auditions. Here he met Bono, and the band was formed, but Dik Evans left it shortly before it was given the name of U2.

U2's debut album was released in 1980, and was named Boy, which was a success in Ireland. Undecided at one point of time in the year 1982, as to whether he would remain with U2 or not, he was persuaded to stay on by fellow band members. The Edge wrote a song for U2 that year, "Sunday Bloody Sunday," which was to become a part of the third album War, and very popular later on. Till date U2 has released numerous albums, all of which display The Edge's innovative guitar style. In 2005, U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Edge's guitar style is distinctly his own, with a chiming sound that he achieves through digital delay effects, reverb, and a mixture of textured and melodious sounds. His humanitarian efforts are as laudable as that of Bono, and currently he is involved in a project called Music Rising, to help victims of the Hurricane Katrina.

Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine

Tom Morello was born in Harlem, New York on May 30, 1964. Morello was interested in music from a very young age, but began learning the guitar seriously around 1984. That year he formed a band called the Electric Sheep. He was more inclined towards heavy metal, and found inspiration in bands like Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. Morello later developed a unique guitar style, based on punk rock sounds.

Morello joined a glam rock band called Lock Up in 1988, but was with them only for a few years. His introduction to Brad Wilk, Zack de la Rocha, and Tim Commerford, was a vital point in his career when he formed the band Rage Against The Machine, in 1991, with them. The band had achieved great success, in the US and Europe, with songs that were a mix of hard rock, heavy metal, hip hop and funk. Morello's unconventional guitar techniques created a new and exciting sound for an ever rising number of fan base. Their first self titled album was a huge success. In 1999 the band released their most successful record yet, The Battle of Los Angeles.

With the departure of front singer de la Roche, the rest of the Rage began music sessions with Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, following a suggestion from producer Rick Rubin. They finally formed a band with Chris, named Audioslave, in the year 2001. Their debut album was a massive success, with a triple platinum record status, featuring hit songs like 'Cochise', among others. The next Audioslave album was Out of Exile, released in the year 2005, which was again a big success. Their third album, Revelations, featured songs which were to become hits, such as album cover 'Revelations', in the year 2006. However, the very next year, Chris Cornell left Audioslave, and the three went back to Rage, with Zack de la Rocha back with them.

Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits

Mark Knopfler was born on August 12, 1949, in Glasgow, Scotland. Knopfler is best known as the lead guitarist and vocalist for the group Dire Straits, which he founded with his brother David in the year 1977.

Mark's musical abilities were exhibited early on his life, and during his teens he joined anonymous school bands and was inspired by Elvis, Chet Atkins, Scotty Moore, Hendrix, and James Burton among others. His first TV appearance on a local channel came in the form of a harmony duo, with him and a school friend forming the group.

In 1967 Knopfler enrolled at the Harlow Technical College for a Journalism degree, and at the end of which he got a job in Leeds, as a junior reporter. He lived in Leeds for a while, but then he moved to London and joined a band called the Brewers Droop, and appeared on their album "The Booze Brothers". During his time, he discovered that playing an old acoustic guitar with a makeshift extra light strings added to make it play, with a finger-picking technique was his future "voice" as a guitarist.

When he formed Dire Straits with his brother, rehearsals for their hugely popular single "Sultans of Swing" were on their way for a quiet release. Initially, the self titled album Dire Straits, released in 1978, was not welcomed with a lot of fanfare, but when it became a chart hit, album sales began taking off across the countries of Europe, and then the United States. The second album was released in 1979, named Communique, reaching number one in Germany. Dire Straits most famous album was their fifth album, Brothers in Arms, which featured number one hits such as "Money for Nothing", and "So Far Away".
